Halal (حلال) & Haraam (حرام)

Things that Allah ( الله ) allowed Muslims to eat are known as Halal (حلال).

Haraam (حرام) are things which Muslims are not allowed to eat.

Tips for shopping for Halal food

Birds

1• Birds of prey (e.g. Eagle) are haram (حرام)

2• Birds who use their feet to hold food while eating (e.g. Parrot, Crow ) are haram (حرام).

3• Birds have visible ears (e.g. Owl) are haram (حرام)

4• Birds with no feathers (e.g.Bat) are haram (حرام)

5• All birds who die by themselves or in an accident are haram (حرام).

All others are Halal (حلال).

The Slaughter (ذبحا)

Slaughter (ذبحا) means killing the birds in the right way by saying the name of Allah ( الله )

After choosing a Halal (حلال) birds, we must slaughter (ذبحا) it by saying the name of Allah three times.

Bismilla Allah hu akbar, Allah hu akbar, Allah hu akbar .

بسم اللہ ، اللہ اکبر ، اللہ اکبر ، اللہ اکبر

Animals

1• Animals with solid paw/feet (e.g. Horse, Dog, Tiger) are haram (حرام)

Those having cloven (e.g. Goat, Cow) are halal (حلال) .

2• Animals with simple stomach(e.g. Pig, Donkey) are haram (حرام)

Those having compound stomach (e.g. Camel, Sheep) are halal (حلال).

3• All animals and birds who die by themselves or in an accident are haram (حرام).

Fishes

The sea life which can live in both water and outside water is haraam (حرام)(e.g. Tortoise/ turtle, Alligator etc). Others which can only live in water are halaal (حلال) .

The sea life does not need slaughtering.

Insects & Reptiles

All insects and reptiles are haraam (حرام).

Fruits & vegetables

All fruits and vegetables are allowed to eat for Muslims.

Shopping Tips

1• Buy items which are Halal Certified. These items do have a special logo similar to as shown below. These logo means that "This product is produced by using Halal ingredients"

2• Always read the ingredients to ensure there is no pork, animal fat, animal gelatine or alcohol added in it.

3• Buy product which are prepared using vegetable ingredients only. These items do have a special logo similar to as shown below. These logo means that "Only vegetarian ingredients are used to prepare this product"

4• If you are buying a prepared meal, cooked meal or fast food, do ensure the “Halal certificate” is displayed in that shop. Sample halal certificate shown below

Eat healthy & fresh

Any food that is poisons, harmfull or make you lose your mind is haraam (حرام) (alcohol).
